Originally a photographer, from 1982 onwards, Jean-Marie Gheerardijn began intensively creating with his preferred material: flies. Raising them and executing them, this “Artistic Dictator”(as he calls himself) creates works of art with their bodies, which we can associate with still life, wildlife art or vanity. The accumulation of flies invites the spectator, not without humour, to go beyond aesthetic pleasure in order to question philosophy. The flies invade the everyday life objects that the artist picks up at flea markets, accumulates and recombines within small sculptures which have been independent since the 1990’s. (Julie Hanique)
