For a number of years, Michael Dans has led the life of a traveller, living in turn in Liege, Amsterdam, Brussels, Helsinki, Berlin, Antwerp… In the same way, he expresses himself through techniques as different as installation, sculpture, drawing and photography. On his way, he has developed a formal universe in which we can highlight aesthetic and disturbing images, a critical view of society and an intimate confrontation of his fears. In his large-scale Chinese ink drawings, he depicts, among other things, a teddy bear that is more worrying than soft. Favouring efficiency and dark humour, his work sometimes borders on caricature. In the case of the photography in SPACE, some shoes appear at the foot of green mountains, revealing on closer viewing, that people are hiding their identity behind a disguise, a recurrent theme in Dans’s work. By parodying a meeting of Ku Klux Klan members, the artist highlights the absurdity and archaic nature of this type of organisation. (Genaro Marcos)
