In 2006, Nina Berman was awarded World Press Photo first prize in the portrait section with her disturbing image of the marriage of an American marine disfigured during a suicide bombing in Iraq. The ex-soldier divorced several months later after more than a year of convalescence in hospital. This work is in line with the photographer’s first monograph, Purple Hearts – Back from Iraq, comprising portraits and interviews of US soldiers injured during the war, and published by Trolley in 2004. Born in New York, the documentary photographer travels far and wide throughout the United States scrutinising the political and American social climate. Her work has been awarded numerous prizes like the New York Foundation of the Arts and The Open Society institute Documentary Fund. Her photos are notably published in The National Geographic, Geo, The Times and Newsweek. (Genaro Marcos)
